UK Government Support for Green Business Initiatives
In line with the Government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, substantial funding of nearly £5 billion has been allocated to assist UK businesses in adopting environmentally friendly practices. These green business grants are available to small enterprises and cover a range of initiatives such as installing heat pumps, electric car charging points, solar panels, and improving building insulation. The grants are offered at national, regional, and local authority levels. Below is a list of some of the grants available in the UK:
1. United Kingdom Workplace Charging Scheme:
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based program that provides financial support for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle (EV) charge points. The scheme covers up to 75% of the total costs, capped at £350 per socket and a maximum of 40 sockets per applicant. The scheme is available in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
2. Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England and Wales only):
This scheme offers grants to assist with the replacement of fossil fuel heating systems with heat pumps or biomass boilers. Grants are available for air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, and biomass boilers. The grant amounts are £7,500 for air source heat pumps, £7,500 for ground source heat pumps, and £5,000 for biomass boilers. To be eligible, the property must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
3. Solar Panel Grants for Businesses:
Businesses that use solar panels can generate cash from National Grid suppliers for the energy they produce and do not use.
4. Birmingham Commercial Vehicle Grant:
This grant scheme aims to help small businesses within the Birmingham Clean Air Zone (CAZ) comply with European emission standards. Small businesses that own or lease heavy goods vehicles or light goods vehicles that are not compliant with CAZ emission standards can apply for grants of up to £15,000 per heavy goods vehicle and up to 35% of the maximum cost of an upgrade for light goods vehicles, with a maximum grant of £4,000.
5. Derbyshire Green Entrepreneurs Fund:
This fund supports businesses, organizations, communities, and individuals interested in developing skills in the green economy, green energy, and carbon reduction projects. The fund offers grants for alternative energy, clean fuel, and carbon reduction projects, as well as larger-scale carbon-cutting projects in Derbyshire. It also provides scholarships for individuals to retrain in the field of low carbon, green energy.
6. East Sussex Energy Efficiency Grants:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in East Sussex can apply for grants between £200 and £1,000 to cover up to 40% of the total value of their energy efficiency project. To be eligible, the SME must have fewer than 250 full-time equivalent employees, a turnover less than £44 million, and a premises in East Sussex.
7. Greater Manchester Carbon Reduction Grant:
SMEs in Greater Manchester can apply for grants between £2,000 and £25,000 to cover up to 50% of the cost of energy efficiency improvements. The maximum grant amount is £12,500.
8. Norfolk and Suffolk Business Transition to Net Zero Grant:
This grant supports businesses in Norfolk and Suffolk that aim to reduce their carbon footprint and increase productivity. Grants between £25,000 and £100,000 are available, covering up to 20% of the development costs.
9. Nottinghamshire Workplace Travel Grant:
Small businesses in Nottingham can receive financial support of up to £25,000 to implement workplace travel improvements such as electric vehicle charge points, cycle parking, showers, and car parking management.
10. Worcestershire Net Zero Worcestershire:
Grant funding is available for SMEs in Worcestershire to implement energy-saving initiatives, including LED lighting, heating and insulation improvements, and renewables. The grant amounts vary depending on the location.
